EDT April 20, 2020 — NAAAP is pleased to announce a partnership with APIA Scholars in its SMART (Scholar Mentoring + Access to Resources and Training) program, with the goal of enrolling 150 NAAAP members as mentors by June 1, 2020.
“Mentoring is an essential leadership skill that contributes to NAAAP’s main objective of building AAPI leaders. We’re delighted to partner with APIA Scholars to support APIA college students and early-career professionals” said Betty Lo, NAAAP’s interim national president. Ms. Lo also serves on the APIAScholars’ board.
Collectively, 94% of NAAAP members have post-graduate degrees, and 80% have five or more years of professional experience; NAAAP’s members are well positioned to engage with APIA Scholars on topics of career development, academic pressures, networking, and navigating a rapidly changing workplace.
The mentor-mentee relationship is designed to be entirely virtual, with mentors and mentees interacting via videoconference or teleconference for 1-2 hours per month over six months. An online platform provides career development topics, Frequently Asked Questions and solutions, and a writing log to privately record notes during and after mentoring discussions. NAAAP will be creating a social media group for NAAAP mentors and a virtual celebration to recognize its member-mentors.
