Inaugural API Community Summit at 2021 Leadership Convention by NAAAP

Besides a devastating global pandemic, 2021 will also be associated with the #stopasianhate movement, which is both heartening in the gained visibility for the community and also heart-breaking for the realization of how much further we still need to go. For that reason, this year’s Leadership Convention by NAAAP will have a very different narrative around what it means to be an Asian Pacific Islander (API) individual and supporter of the community. NAAAP will present an inaugural API Community Summit as a way to create a space that will potentially be very challenging, but also extremely important to what the API community is facing today, and how each of us can stay a part of this imperative conversation and major movement tomorrow.

Tiffany Nguyen, API Community Summit Director, describes why it is so important to introduce this type of summit this year at the Leadership Convention.

We can all come together and discuss prominent issues facing our community, as well as get to (virtually) meet. Different groups may not have specific tools or resources. . .having these events can help them see what information and resources they are missing and what else they can share with others.”

The API Summit takes place on Friday, Aug 13th from 12 p.m.- 4 p.m. EDT/9 a.m. – 1 p.m. PDT. This Summit focuses on a breadth of career information from fellow API leaders and other important industry leaders in regards to the API community. Attendees will hear about situations the API community faces, such as the mental health consequences of this year’s terrible events. Industry experts will provide their thoughts on how as a society we arrived here and how prevalent concepts, such as the Model Minority Myth, plays into that. The summit is geared towards API community leaders and supporters in the hope to empower attendees to move forward as one thriving community, together.

NAAAP is excited to feature as keynote Chantale Wong, Career Public Servant & Founder of CAPAL. Other notable API Summit speakers and panelists who will inform and inspire convention attendees include: author Paula Yoo, documentary filmmaker Barb Lee, commentator Emil Guillermo, and television producer Joel Relampagos. Join us for this energizing and impactful summit surrounding API community conversations!
